"The stage with the green screen was filmed at this small dig on the outskirts of London, barely large enough to pass for a two car garage. It was chilly and overcast; foreboding and perfectly appropriate for the 14 hour shoot day looming before us.
The Bloc Party guys arrived one by one and headed upstairs to the kitchen, where they kicked back, checked emails, and shared some tea and toast with jam and marmalade (Hey, it's the UK, and it was a nice departure from the bagels and cream cheese we're used to).
This video is designed to look like one shot, in which our camera continually pulls backwards through the aisle of a train, all the while encountering multiple versions of Kele, the band, and friends from different 'memories' in his life, all visible on-screen at once.
To achieve this, we had to shoot on green screen, breaking down all the scenes to whatever might take place on a single pair of train seats. So, that's all we had on stage. Two vintage, maroon-leather seats, bolted into a green floor. As a result, we had a phenomenal amount of footage to shoot to make this train look convincingly full of people. Fortunately, we lucked out. They were fresh. Bloc Party were scheduled for another shoot the next morning at a pub in the area for 'The Prayer'. We were glad to get them first because it was going to be a LONG day.Acting on a green stage for a realistic scene can be horrifyingly difficult. You need to deliver a convincing performance for a scene that doesn't yet exist. You're alone, standing on a nearly empty stage, no room to walk around or walls to lean on. There is a giant camera focused on you and a room full of crew and extras watching you sweat under hot lights and you've got to 'imagineer' yourself into the expected shot. You're so completely exposed you might as well be naked. If you think it's tough to be a musician stepping onto a stage in front of thousands, try this. It's worse."
