Bloc Party question Labour's priorities From the excellent website that is Global Cool:
Kele Okereke from Bloc Party believes the money the Government intend on spending on Trident would be better invested in the fight against climate change. Bloc Party are among a battalion of music acts, including Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, Damon Albarn, Razorlight and Jarvis Cocker, who have signed up to a campaign to “choose peace and justice, not nuclear weapons and war.”
CND recently projected a ‘No Trident Replacement’ logo on the House of Commons, and tomorrow (24th February) an anti-nuclear power march will kick-off at Speakers’ Corner in Central London at midday before rounding off in a rally on Trafalgar Square later in the afternoon. Okereke, frontman of the much lauded East London four-piece, said: “Climate change is clearly the greatest security threat we face. A £76 billion investment in tackling it would change the world for the better. £76 billion on replacing Trident will bring us closer to catastrophe.”
It is not the first time the singer, whose band is lined up to appear at this summer’s Live Earth event, has spoken out about climate change. Global Cool caught up with him at last summer’s V Festival where he said: “Global warming is something that I’m very worried about right now and I don’t want future generations… my children to be in a situation that’s uninhabitable, that’s for sure. In 10 years time the planet will be irreversibly changed unless we do something about it now.”
I love Bloc Party and I think Kele's a great guy but I don't think he should be so quick to choose sides in this situation since global warming hasn't even been scientifically proven. Plus, even if Global Warming is real, it certainly won't have any tangible effects within the next 10 years.
You're so right! Something that has no effects in the next 10 years shouldn't be considered as a problem. Just leave it to the kids, they'll sort it out. Within the next 15 years the anti-global-warming-techniques will be so "advanced" that the climate change is of no concern to us now...
Global warming has been scientifically proven! Just last month an IPCC report (which took years to write, with every word pored over by 100s if not 1000s of international scientists) stated that humans are 90% likely to be responsible for the current increasing temperatures, with the rise set to continue. Anyone who debates climate change is either in denial, or being funded by Bush's government! /rant over
"As anticipated by scientists, global mean surface temperatures have risen over the past century." As anticipated? Only 30 years ago, scientists were anticipating a new Ice Age and writing books called The Cooling"
Not all scientists are the same. It's attitudes like yours that mean that the very thousands of international scientists that Jim refers to HAVE to spend years producing a report - years that we CANNOT AFFORD.
** Global warming HAS been scientifically proven.
** Global warming IS the biggest problem facing humanity today.
** Global warming MUST be dealt with immediately.
Disagree with the above? Have any questions? I'm a Geography student at the University of Cambridge. Try me.
"Only 30 years ago, scientists were anticipating a new Ice Age and writing books called The Cooling"
There will be a new 'ice age'. Do your research. The world moves through glacial-interglacial cycles. We've been in the present interglacial for roughly 10,000 years; the average length of an interglacial is 12,000 years. Some scientists think that we'll be in the next glacial in a couple of millennia; others say that this interglacial is due to be longer anyway; others argue that our emissions will delay the onset of the next glacial. Whichever of these is correct, what IS true is that we've never had the situation we do now, which is why we don't KNOW what will happen; whether CO2 concentrations will affect the glacial onset and how. What we do know is that there is currently a warming trend. This will continue for years even if CO2 emissions are cut off TODAY, because of the laws of accumulation.

^speaks the truth. Everyone should watch 'An Inconvenient Truth' by Al Gore at least once...some of the evidence presented in that is pretty hard to argue against, especially the correlation between the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the average global temperature rise.
What James said. But slice through the irrelevant anti-Bush propaganda and just focus on the real truth. (No smart-arse comments about the emissions from all the plane journeys he made to give those lectures.)
First two comments are so sadly irrational. As said, global warming has been scientifically proven, although I guess there's no need for a scientifical research to understand global warming is real: here in Italy plants began to blossom 2 weeks ago, and we've never had such a warm winter, you could even go out in late afternoon just with a sweater on. The problem CAN'T be delayed to future generation, as in 10 years it'll be harder and harder to fight. What we've to do is to act NOW; and destinating that money to Trident is such a waste. I guess the reasons that lie behind this decision is mainly concerned with the threat of the run to atomic weaponry, being it for defensive purposes. THe fact is that if we go on like that, we'll have nothing to defend: global warming is the threat.
