Bloc Party's brand new single, 'Flux', made its radio debut tonight! To listen to it, go here and fast-forward 22 minutes. To say it's a departure for the band would be understatement of the century...'Flux' is a Bloc Party song at heart, but masked by a euphoric, 1990s euro-disco production and vocodered vocals (good example/bad example). It's a brave move, and most of the fan feedback is positive so far (join the debate here). Coming to a club near you very soon...it's going to sound awesome.
Watch Bloc Party performing 'Flux' at New York's Madison Square Garden yesterday:
Not to keen on the distortion on Kele's voice, but the rest is just lovely:D But I hope they don't choose this production style on all their material, I also likey the old Bloc, you know?
I loved the live version but this sound FAAAAAAAAAAAAAR to un-rock for me, I'm kinda embarresed to listen to it. My favourite part of the live version has become my least favourite part of the song and the chorus has all the life sucked out of it. Whatever happened to the guitar?
No - I cant like this song. Sorry Bloc but for the first time ever, you've let me down!!!
They're ruined this song. And to be honest it wasn't too promising to start off with.
I dont mind trace amounts of electro like they did in The Prayer but Flux has gone too fast. We need some raw guitar rock from you guys FAST before we totally lose faith in you.
I would like to see more of these types of songs, but I don't think the Bloc should embrace this as a totally new style. They should stick with their old style as well. Having a record full of songs like this would be admittedly quite disappointing.
This is exactly why Kele said no to YouTube vids - I got so attached to the live version and of course - the recorded version is nothing like it! It's like Blue Moon/England all over again! I seriously hope they accidentally put out the remix or something because I'm not digging this.
I really, really hate to say this, but the song sounds like the intro of "The Adventure" - Angels and airwaves... with that guitar and that drum, and I hate them (sorry if you do not). I mean, it's obviously a coincidence (it must be a coincidence!) but... it leaves me with that taste of "commercial".
Silent Alarm, would you come back?. (Yeah, I need to get this tragical)
Jackknife Lee is the worst thing that has ever happened to Bloc Party. Paul Epworth captured the jittery BP that I fell in love with. This song is nothing more than rubbish, yet it is a continuation of the overproduction debacle that was A Weekend in the City. BP really needs to revisit their Silent Alarm days, because they are quickly losing one of their most devoted fans. The musical "evolution" has gone too far. Bloc Party, you've broken my heart...
i have to say i agree with some of the comments above, watching the live version is a lot better than the recorded one. however, bloc need to get back to the way they were, it would be a real shame to see their next album reflecting this. bring back Paul Epworth!!!
I have to totally disagree with the negativity surrounding this new song and the grasping of the original Bloc Party, Yes, silent alarm grabbed my attention and made me instantly love Bloc Party, the sounds were tight and drumming immense, then came two more years and if i remember met the same sort of mixed views. Bloc Party need to change and experiment and make different music, hence A weekend in the city, it wasnt too far from the Bloc we know but good to see them progressing, if you want a band that sounds the same every time they have a new record then go and pick one of the numerous new indie bands, kooks, razorlight, the twang, the view (anything with 'the')etc but Bloc have already said that the new record is going to be different but closer to original silent alarm, just as fans dont stifle them and demand carbon copy records that will be dismissed by people who havent heard them before, this is all just my opinion so critique your heart out by all means, i personally like the new song, drumming is tight, lyrics are again great, chorus is inspired, voice effects work well (dont think they're going to do it on every song!) does need a heavier riff/solo but a good song none the less!
Keep them coming Bloc, well done for trying something different!
Do have too say that the live version is better IMO. It's an alright song, showing a band experimenting with there music, I still think that there next albumn will sound different too this however.
i love it. once again, they've done something unexpected, reminds me of "cain said to abel" more than anything else in their back catalogue so far. if you want a band who always sounds the same, i'm sure hard-fi's new album will suit you just fine. in the meantime, this just confirms that bp can, and probably will, do anything they like when it comes to producing album no. 3 and that's the way i like it.
Agree, the live version is much more raw and emotive than the studio one.
I'm really happy that BP keep evolving and aren't afraid to try new things but Lee's production is really sucking the soul out of the music.
I'd be really happy to see Eliot James produce album 3. I listen to the Weekend b-sides/extra tracks a LOT more than I do to Weekend. They show just as much variety and evolution as the sound of Weekend but there's something much more tangible to them.
Link to their performance last night on the Conan O'Brien show. If the link doesn't work, just go to NBC.com and find your way from there.
Anyone wonder if they're referring to their musical style when they say they're in a state of flux? I like the song, its bloc party, but its different. Regardless its their music they can do what they like, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to enjoy it.
That was FLuking brilliant. Its kind of on the same page as Rhododendrons and Pin Me Down but aye a nice riff from The Russ would have topped it off nicely but i love it all the same. And gone all you people pissing and moaning about thier knew "direction" shush. It's still bloc party and they only get better!! So if your a true fan you'l overcome and adapt instead of being a twat!!!
I really like Flux. It makes a great dance/party song, and I think people are over-reacting: this song is not the model for the new album. Just like Silent Alarm or AWITC which had "danceable" songs like Banquet and the Prayer or mellow songs like Blue Light and On, I am sure their next album will have a wide scope of songs.
"So if your a true fan you'l overcome and adapt instead of being a twat!!!"
... What the hell?, maybe I'm a fan, not a puppet, we are just givin' out our constructive critics, good/bad ones are the things that an evolving band apreciate. At the end THEY decide what is the best for them. And no, we are not saying BP's second album will be like this, it's a good b-side/outoffalbum song, I think that explain the rest.
I have just listened to both the live version and the studio one, I I have to say, I think Bloc Party are always making moves in the right direction. Yet again they have shocked me with a release that sounds different to what I could have imagined. I love it. We moan when our bands come out with the same sound every time, yet when a band makes an attempt to come out with something original to their sound, we moan that it isn't like their other material! I think bloc party should keep doing what they're doing and continue to go in whatever direction they see fit. It's worked for them so far!
Please remember that this isnt even an album song!!!! its a nice way for them to release an experiment and not be cained for it! listen, enjoy, buy and relax!
can't agree with some of the negative comments here. this song is a great confirmation that BP is a band that is able to try out different sounds and styles without losing their key sound and the great melodies. i'm glad they chose jacknife lee again to produce this single and i hope they go on working with him on the next record, because i love his production on AWITC and this song. so, congrats boys and keep it going. sooo looking forward to see you in november...
