  Bloc Party get experimental!

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Gordy has hinted that the sound of the new album may surprise a few people, naming TV on the Radio and Radiohead as inspiration for the band during the songwriting process.

Bloc Party are set to head into a London studio next month to begin recording. Speaking about the direction of the new songs, Gordy says "...we've retained some of that jerkiness [from Silent Alarm] but we didn't want to do anything that we've already done. There's a lot of gentle stuff, but we don't want to have a gentle record." Some of the new material will employ electronic processed beats and Gordy also adds that the band hope to make a textured record, creating music out of quite difficult sounds.

Don't expect a 'Kid A' though - Bloc Party haven't forsaken the dancefloor quite yet! 'Uniform' will be a people-pleaser, 'Atonement' has been mentioned as a possible centerpiece of the album and 'Wet' is described as "a brooding dancefloor-type thing, and quite druggy." The latter track might even feature some strings!

Thanks to Rodney Resella for pointing me to the article.

Those lucky fans who managed to get hold of tickets will hear the fruits of Bloc Party's labour on the intimate fan club tour, which begins a week today in Brighton.

Click over to the mp3 page of www.blocparty.net to download Bloc Party's first radio session - a showcase slot on BBC Radio 1's Lamacq Live.

This was aired on January 12th 2004, so it was the first time a lot of people, including me, were introduced to the genius of Bloc Party! They played
She's Hearing Voices, The Marshals Are Dead and Little Thoughts.

Also, the 'Helicopter' remix single is released today in the U.S.! You can buy it from here.

Exclusive: new song titles, recording details

Bloc Party have so far demoed 15 songs for the new album. Highlights include the following songs, which I've been told sound amazing:

'Hunting For Witches' (described by Kele as 'old skool Bloc Party, with distortion and stuff')
'Day One'
'Death Of A Century'
'Blue Moon'
'Waiting For The 7.18'
'Uniform'

You heard it here first! Expect to hear some of these played on the forthcoming fan club tour.

There's going to be a few more songwriting sessions and then the recording of the album will begin, with either Steve Dub (Chemical Brothers / Roots Manuva) or Jacknife Lee (Snow Patrol / U2) on production duties. The band will record one song with each prospective producer to help them make the decision.

If all goes to plan, Bloc Party should have a new single out in July, with the album to follow in September. Woop.

By the way, those of you who can't afford a seating ticket for the Royal Albert Hall gig can buy cheaper standing tickets for £18.50 from the venue's website.

  Gordy records track with Yourcodenameis:milo

Gordy has recorded an experimental track with Geordie noiseniks Yourcodenameis:milo for the British equivalent of Queens Of The Stone Age's 'Desert Sessions'. Inspired by Josh Homme's experimental project where he regularly lures musicians into the Californian desert to record, Gordy laid down a song at the band's Newcastle HQ just before Christmas.

Speaking about the recording sessions, he told NME.com: "We wrote and recorded a song in a day. It was really good fun and they're a great bunch of guys. It was great doing something different and it was worth it as well. I was kind of nervous about it to begin with but it worked out really well."

Over the past few months, Tom Vek, Reuben and Martin Grech have also contributed to the project. YCNI:M are now hoping to coax PJ Harvey, a veteran from the original 'Desert Sessions', and Bjork to Newcastle.

The project is tentatively titled 'The International League of Super Best Friends'. An album release and tour are being considered - check back for more info!

Bloc Party to headline Teenage Cancer Trust show at Royal Albert Hall

Bloc Party will play a special one-off gig at the Royal Albert Hall on Wednesday March 29th to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Supporting BP will be Scottish popcore outfit, Biffy Clyro and colander-bashing, Eel Pie Island natives, The Mystery Jets.

Members of Marshals can log on now to gain access to an exclusive, limited pre-sale. Non-members will have to wait until 10am tomorrow morning (Tuesday February 14th) to buy their tickets from the usual outlets, such as www.aloud.com.

Each day in the UK, 6 teenagers will find out they have cancer. These young people often get a raw deal, receiving hospital treatment in inappropriate facilities alongside children or old people. The Teenage Cancer Trust focuses on the needs of teenagers and young adults with cancer by providing specialist teenage units in NHS hospitals. The units are colourful and vibrant, equipped with computers, TVs, game consoles, kitchens – to avoid hospital food - and are staffed with professionals able to fully understand the needs of the patients.

TCT has built 7 units to date. The concentration of medical expertise within these units can improve chances of recovery by an anticipated 15%. Units cost on average £1.5 million each to build and TCT would like at least 20 units in the UK so that every teenager with cancer has access. You can read more about the charity by visiting the Teenage Cancer Trust website.

2006 will be the Teenage Cancer Trust’s sixth year at the Royal Albert Hall. To date, these concerts have raised millions of pounds for the charity. Some incredible names have performed in previous years, including The Who, Coldplay, Oasis, Franz Ferdinand and Eric Clapton.

Teenage Cancer Trust shows at the Royal Albert Hall have become, over the last five years, some of the most enjoyable and spontaneous events in the entertainment industry calendar. It’s not uncommon for major artists to turn up on the night and join in a jam session on stage. It’s one of the rare occasions when "special guests” could really mean absolutely anyone.

Also confirmed for this year's shows are Ricky Gervais, Goldfrapp, Razorlight and The Cure!

I'm very, very excited by this gig! Can anyone recommend a good Biffy Clyro album?

  Introducing...Komakino

Komakino will be opening for Bloc Party on the forthcoming fan club tour. This five-piece from Derby, England have so far released just one limited edition single - the awesome 'Say Something'. You can listen to this track, along with live versions of three new songs, on the band's Myspace page. Komakino are one of the bands to look out for in 2006, so it's probably worth turning up early to check them out, especially if Idlewild, Placebo, dual guitar onslaughts and/or slighty crazy lead singers are your kind of thing!
