Before yesterday evening's gig at Boston's Orpheum Theatre, Russell and Kele popped into the VW Green Room to perform a short acoustic set for FNX Radio. View some photos from the session here and, behold...Bloc Party as you've never heard them before (well, apart from those two acoustic songs on 'The Pioneers' single!)
Kele has directed some not-too-friendly words towards Oasis and their repetitive brand of meat-and-potatoes rock...labelling them "the most over-rated and pernicious band of all time". As per usual, the press has quickly caught on, hyping this into a battle of the bands. Only last week, Calvin Harris (who?!) labelled Bloc Party "rubbish, tedious and boring", prompting NME.com to prophesize a "great rock feud"! Read more about Kele's anti-Oasis diatribe here.
Beef between bands: an inevitable result of artistic differences, or a quick way for publishers to sell a few more magazines? Are Oasis really that overrated, or was 'Don't Look Back In Anger' a bit of a tuuune?
"And the Bloc Party just don't stop. Approaching the final stretch on their present North American jaunt, and bound for the old countries next month with Mahogany (reminder: arrive early!), touring juggernauts Bloc Party have just revealed a three-week U.S. coda to their already enormous trek in support of this year's 'A Weekend in the City'. Oft-neglected minor American metropolises like Myrtle Beach and Asbury Park: Bloc Party cares about you! Even you, Pompano Beach, Florida." (from Pitchfork)
The new tour dates go something like this...

On the second night of Bloc Party's two night stint in Los Angeles earlier this week, Final Fantasy (a.k.a. Owen Pallett, violin-looping genius) welcomed Kele onstage to join him in a rendition of Mariah Carey's 'Sweet Fantasy'! This was a bit of a one-off; a special treat for everyone at Final Fantasy's last night supporting Bloc Party. Unfortunately, no bootlegs have surfaced yet, but there's a short video clip on YouTube here!
Bloc Party are the cover stars of the Spring 2007 issue of DUMMY magazine, available to buy or download now! (The download is a 17.25 MB pdf file - scroll down to page 24 for the Bloc Party feature.) The article features some excellent photography by Wolfgang Tillmans, the winner of the Turner Prize in 2000:
(Why the carrot references? Maybe because carrots are the Bloc Party of the vegetable world...unique, versatile, down-to-earth, internationally renowned, but sometimes incorrectly labelled as 'boring'? Or, erm, maybe not...)
Here's Bloc Party's legendary original Black Session, back by popular demand! This was recorded for French radio in February 2005, a week before the release of 'Silent Alarm'.
Here's a veritable feast for the ears...this newest entry in the BLAG PARTY project is a sublime version of 'So Here We Are' by Glaswegian electro artist iamchemist...the euphoric sound of robots falling in love to a soundtrack of celestial synths.
Matt and Kele recently took time out from their hectic schedule to appear on MTV2's Gonzo with Zane Lowe. The full interview is now online, so click here to be enlightened on Kele's secret love for The Feeling and the mysterious ex-bassist known only as 'Spunkfood'.
And for those who just can't get enough Kele & Matt video interviews, here's another one, recorded at SXSW a few days ago.
Bloc Party have announced a show in Auckland, New Zealand on August 8th - their first in Kiwiland. Tickets for the gig at the St. James Theatre will go on sale at 9am from here on Thursday 22nd March.
On Thursday night, Bloc Party closed day two of this year's SXSW Festival with an electrifying one hour set at Stubb's. This was one of the must-see gigs of the week and Kele & co. treated the packed crowd to fifteen songs picked from both albums. Look out for details of a 'Live from SXSW' digital EP from URGE for a chance to experience the beer-soaked occasion from the comfort of your own home.
The tour rolls into San Francisco tonight, before a two night stint in Los Angeles. Judging from the gigreportssofar, Bloc Party look well on their way to winning the hearts of fans across the Atlantic, even managing to incite a (polite) stage invasion in Vancouver!
